Canfield Baseball Club’s 9/10 softball team advances to the Little League State Championship by defeating Elyria 3-2 in a hard fought, come-from-behind victory on Monday, August 1 in Portsmouth, Ohio.
With Elyria winning 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Mary Gomez led the inning off with a walk and Emerson Fletcher with a single. McKenna Carey hit a single scoring Gomez and Fletcher. Jill Baker hit a grounder, forcing Elyria to throw out the go-ahead runner. Alana Marzich hit Baker to second. Baker stole third and scored the winning run on a wild throw. Baker pitched six innings and hit a triple. The game featured great defensive plays by Fletcher amd Mallory Vaclav. Vaclav helped keep Elyria off bases.
The state championship game is Thursday, August 4 at 10 a.m. in Portmouth.
