Hoopsters ready for a different game

August 4, 2011
By J.T. Whitehouse
The Boardman High School Lady Hoopsters parent boosters are gearing up for their annual golf outing at Mill Creek Park at noon on Aug. 12. The event is in its 14th year of supporting the girls basketball program.

"We put this on to support the teams," said event committee member Sharon Tomcsanyi. "It's the only fund-raiser we do."

According to Tomcsanyi, the event raises funds through business sponsorship and individual entry fees. After the bills are paid, the event in past years has brought in thousands of dollars for the basketball teams that include the freshmen, JV and varsity squads.

"It provides shoes, athletic gear, equipment and gym bags," Tomcsanyi said. "It also covers replacement equipment and covers the cost of an athletic trainer for the teams."

The event is handled solely by the parents of Boardman girls basketball players and includes parents of former players. Some of the members had girls go through the program, but have stuck around to help the next generation of Lady Spartan basketball players.

The golf outing began in 1998 and has proven successful in supporting girls basketball. It has also drawn a lot of avid golfers, including girls basketball coach Ron Moschella, who is said to be as good on the course as he is on the court.

The event will include a noon lunch and a 1 p.m. shotgun start. All registration fees are due no later than Aug. 10.

For information on sponsorship, call Dave Fiffick at 330-770-0813. To register, contact Saunni Russo at 330-501-7576.
