Falcons, Colts get ready for the football season

August 4, 2011
By Ryan McMasters
The Austintown Little Falcons and Colts football teams were out in the heat last week as they began some rigorous practice sessions preparing for the start of the season.

On the Colts side, assistant coach of the 100-pound squad, Keith Winford says he is happy to see so many kids returning to play in his varsity squad that were playing junior varsity last year.

"They're staying focused and putting out a lot of effort,” he said. “They're a good group of kids."

The Colts 120-pound squad’s head coach Chris Jones says he has a lot of new faces on his squad. "Most of the kids have just moved up from the 100-pound team this year, and they have a lot to learn,” Jones said. “It's still early to tell how this season is going to turn out. We'll know after the Friendship Game against the Falcons on Aug. 12."

On the oldest squad, the Colts 140-pound team’s head coach Dennis Bellish says he lost a lot of players to AMS this year. Most of his squad has moved up from the 120-pound squad. He says he's a little short on players this year, but kids are still signing up, and he will be taking new players until Aug. 12.
