Northern Strut brings home trophies

Northern Strut Twirling Teams recently celebrated its 16th anniversary season culminating in numerous honors at marching auxiliaries competitions, earning several positions on local collegiate twirling lines and high school majorette and color guard lines. The organization also added a new staff member and plans to send six members to the Marching Auxiliaries Summer Camp and Competition.

This past competition season with marching auxiliaries, Northern Strut earned a Superior Rating, Best in Class, Best Choreography, and the Winner’s Circle Cup for their high school/collegiate Team Twirl entry. Champion senior duet honors went to Kerry Kingsley and Madeline Crish with first runner-up honors to Monica Mattiussi and Dina Notareschi. Shannon Chaffee earned first runner up in the senior solo division followed by Kerry Kingsley second runner up, Jessica Yozwiak third runner up and Dina Notareschi and Kathryn Rosinski tying for fourth runner up.

In the junior solo twirling division, Mattiussi earned top honors and Crish earned a fourth runner up placement.

In the pre-kindergarten division, Adele Colonna took top honors as did Emmy Graffius in the senior color guard solo division with Rosinski following with a first runner up. Additionally, Crish and Graffius earned Superior I ratings at the national competition in Fort Worth, Texas, and Graffius placed fourth overall in the senior color guard category.

Earning spots on twirling lines at the collegiate level are Meghan Susko of Poland twirling for the Kent State University Touch of Gold Twirlers; Jillian Wollet, also of Poland, twirling for the University of Pittsburgh Golden Girls; and Jessica Yozwiak of Boardman twirling for the Thiel College Majorettes. Twirlers selected for area high school positions include: Shannon Chaffee and Megan Howard (captain) for the Boardman Spartan Twirlers; Mattiussi, a Cardinal Mooney Twirler; Madeline Crish, Celia Melillo and Notareschi, all Poland majorettes; Emily Combs, Amanda Dicks (captain), and Cassidy Oyler, Springfield Majorettes; Cali Gialousis and Kathryn Rosinski (twirler) for the Ursuline Color Guard; and Emmy Graffius and Alyssa Thomas, Western Reserve Color Guard.

Several twirlers will be attending the Marching Auxiliaries Summer Camp and Competition held annually at Ashland University. Those attending the event will include: Mattiussi of Austintown, Jessica Yozwiak of Boardman; Emmy Graffius and Alyssa Thomas of Canfield; Crish of Poland; Oyler of Springfield. They will be working hard to achieve Northern Strut’s 11th consecutive grand champion honor at the camp.

NSTT expanded their twirling staff this season to include Rebecca Platt, former Springfield Local Majorette captain and member of the 2008 MA National Champion Senior Twirl Duet.
