July 20, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
The Canfield Swim Club’s swim team beat Logan, 403-19 on July 13 at Canfield Swim and Tennis Club. The Canfield swim team is coached by Kylie Gamilier and assistants Emily King and Jim Kopp. Connor Brady broke the record in the 13- and 14 boys butterfly with a time of 28.03. Triple first place winners were: Marissa Landers, Gina Landers, Max Dawson, Maggie Beistel, Sarah Heaven, Connor Brady, Matthew Bogen, Olivia Williamson and Briana O’Malley.

Canfield swimmers were also among the members of the Youngstown Swim League that competed in the All Star Pentathlon at Youngstown State University on July 17. Teams competing besides Canfield were Applewood, Boardman, WOC, Logan, TTYCC, FAST and Poland.

The pentathlon has been held since 1991 and is an individual competition. With the exception of 8 and unders, swimmers compete in five events including butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and an individual medley. The 8 and unders do not perform an individual medley. After all events are completed, the lowest accumulated time in each age group is named the winner.

Canfield had 18 swimmers participating this year, 12 of which placed in the top six in their age group. Those swimmers are: Marissa Landers, second place in the 8 and under girls and Sirin Nalluri who was fifth for the boys; for the 9- to 10-year-old girls Gina Landers placed second, and Mackenzie Hammond placed fifth. Max Dawson was fourth for the boys. In the 11- and 12-year-old age group had Maggie Beistel placing third and Sydney Stewart fifth for the girls, while Cullen Brady placed fifth for the boys. in the 13- and 14-year-old girls group Sarah Heaven took fourth place, for the boys Connor Brady went away with second place and Kyle Anderson took third place. In the 15- to 18-year-old boys division it was Daniel Bogen taking fourth place.
