Spartans share league title in four-way finish

June 7, 2011
By Jim McCreary
The Boardman Spartans had a great season under the leadership of their first year head coach Bob Beam.

Coach Beam reflects, “This was a great turn around in one season for our program and the credit goes to all nine seniors.”

The Spartans finished 19–9, 9-5 in the Federal League, to share the Federal League title with Canton GlenOak, Massillon Perry and Uniontown Lake.

“The seniors approached the season with the attitude and effort that we could get something accomplished this year,” coach Beam continued. “It is a great feeling for a coach to send his seniors out as winners. It is something special to be part of a championship in this conference.”

This is the first Federal League title for the baseball team since joining the league in 2002, they join track and bowling as the only other boys’ teams to win a league title. The Federal League has been touted as the second most competitive league in Ohio and ranked 12th in the country.

The Federal League has bestowed the following awards on Spartan players for the present season: First Team All Federal League Dan Popio (junior catcher) and Joe Markovitch (senior outfielder); Second Team All Federal League Troy Parks (junior pitcher) and Carmen Tarantino (senior infielder); Honorable Mention All Federal League Derek Pasquale (junior infielder) and Nico DiIanni (sophomore outfielder); and All Academic Federal League

Mark Leone (senior first base), Mark Calautti (senior third base), and Phil Hall (senior pitcher). Dan Popio was also voted as runner-up for the Federal League Player of the Year.

Coach Beam has several key underclassmen returning for his second season, including this season’s three award winners Popio, Pasquale and Nico DiIanni, as well as juniors Zach Williams at third Base, Dan Watkins, an outfielder, junior pitchers Brian Smith, Troy Parks and Jake Stauffer, sophomore pitcher Mike Witte and freshman outfielder Phil DiIanni.
