Spartan guys have stormy week as season winds down

The Boardman boys track team lost its second meet of the season 90-47 to the Massillon Perry Panthers over spring break.

The Spartans initially scored in the 110 meter hurdles with senior Clayvon Finch placing first in 15.39 seconds and junior Allen Starkey in second with a time of 17.02 seconds. In the 100 meter dash, senior Nick Buonovolanta placed third with a time of 11.64 seconds.

In the 1600 meter run, senior Eddie Adu-Poku placed second with a time of 4:33, he was followed by freshman Mark Hadley who took third in 4:38. In the 400 meter run, senior Harry Wolfe finished second in a time of 56.26 seconds. The next event, the 300 meter hurdles, Finch was second in 43.11 seconds and junior Michael Moxley was third with a time of 44.45 seconds.

In the 800 meter run, Eddie Adu-Poku placed second with a time of 2:03, while in the 200 meter run Buonavolanta was second in 23.37 seconds and freshman Ivan Adu-Poku finished third with a time of 23.44 seconds. The next event was the 3200 meter run which was won by Hadley in 10:15. In the final running event, the Spartans won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:43.

In the field events, junior Nick Lamb finished third in the discus with a heave of 134 feet. Starkey won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet 9.25 inches. In the high jump, senior Leandre Jackson placed first with a jump of 6 feet, Starkey was third at 5 feet 6 inches.

Coming off that hit, the guys concluded its home schedule with a 70-67 setback at the hands of the Canton McKinley Bulldogs April 26.

The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by seniors Alex Scott and Eddie Adu-Poku and freshmen Alan Burns and Mark Hadley in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:37. The next event, the 110 meter hurdles, senior Clayvon Finch placed second with a career best time of 15.2 seconds. In the 100 meter dash, Spartan sophomore Nathan Jones placed first in 10.7 seconds which was a personal best for him. The Spartans were victorious in the 4x200 meter relay with the team of Jones, freshman Ivan Adu-Poku, senior Nick Buonavolanta, and junior Michael Moxley in a time of 1:31.8.

In the 1600 meter run, freshman Mark Hadley took first with a time of 4:41, he was followed by Adu-Poku in a time of 4:44. Moxley finished third in the 400 meter run with a time of 55.6 seconds. In the 800 meter run, the Spartans swept the event with Eddie Adu-Poku in first at 2:06, Hadley in second at 2:10, and Scott in third at 2:11.

In the 200 meter dash, Jones had another personal best race taking second in 22.3 seconds, he was followed by Ivan Adu-Poku who set a new freshman record in the event with a time of 22.7 seconds. The next event was the 3200 meter run which was won by Hadley in 10:25; Eddie Adu-Poku was third with a time of 10:46.

In the field events, junior John Kuczek won the shot put with a throw of 45 feet 10.75 inches, senior Luis Salomon was third with a heave of 43 feet and 1 inch. Junior Brian Linsley placed second in the discus with a throw of 142 feet and 3 inches, while in the pole vault, senior Corey Zell finished second with a vault of 9 feet and sophomore Fletcher Dunham took third at 6 feet and 6 inches. In the long jump, sophomore Allen Starkey took second with a leap of 19 feet and 5 inches, while in the high jump senior Leandre Jackson finished first at 5 feet 9 inches.

Next up for the Spartans will be the final Federal League duel meet at rival Canton GlenOak, followed a few members of the distance squad competing at the Optimist Meet next Saturday at Austintown Fitch.
