April 26, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
Boardman moved into first place in the Federal League with an 11-7 win over Canton Hoover sweeping the two-game series with the Vikings April 22 at Cene Park. Strong upper winds kept the outfielders guessing and the ball moving. An excellent hitting performance by the bottom of their batting order helped the locals secure the win.

Hoover led batting with Eric LePage, who triple then quickly crossed the plate putting the Vikings on the board first 1-0 in the first inning. Boardman answered back in the bottom of the second inning when Phil DiIanni hit a two-out single and Mark Calautti followed with a double before Derek Pasquale single them both home giving the locals a 2-1 led.

In the fourth inning, Hoover got some hot bats leading off with a double by Zach Haasz and added three more hits, two for doubles, and a walk.  Sophomore Dan Iero was one of the doubles that plated two Hoover runs putting them up 5-2.

The Spartans were able to quickly answer back in the bottom of the inning when four hits sent home five runs. David DiBernardi led off with a walk followed by singles from Joey Markovitch and DiIanni to load up the bases. Calautti followed with a grounder to third base that was throw in the dirt by the baseman in an attempt to stop DiBernardi from scoring leaving everyone safe and tallying the run. A double by Pasquale sent home two more runs before a sac fly by Mark Leone put across another. Danny Popio blasted in the last run of the inning with a two-out double giving the Spartans a 7-5 lead.

Johnny Fithian finished the fifth inning sitting down all three batters before Boardman added a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. A single and a walk let DiIanni single in one run while Pasquale doubled for the second time in as many innings plating the second run.

Hoover tried in the sixth inning when Ryan Sarbaugh singled to lead off from relief pitcher Jake Stauffer but the lefty came back to KO the next two batters before ending the inning with a ground out. Boardman did put across two more runs in the bottom part of the inning from a double by Markovitch that plated Popio and DiBernardi giving Boardman what was the final score 11-7. The win helps Boardman in the Federal League boosting their record to 4-1, 7-2 on the season.

Earlier in the week. the Spartans coasted by the Perry Panthers 8-0 on their way to another Federal League win building on a three-game win streak. The Spartans put Troy Parks on the mound who earned his third win of the season in the contest.

Markovitch carried the Spartans at the plate hitting three-for-three on the night with two doubles, three RBI’s and two runs. Markovitch tallied his first hit in the second inning with a one out double then cruised home on a triple by Calautti.

The third inning saw Boardman rack up the runs getting four across the plate when Nico DiIanni and Leone each singled and Popio walked to load the bases. David DiBernardi singled in one run before Markovitch came through with another double that sent home three more runs.

Boardman added another run in the fourth after Danny Watkins singled to get on and then two more runs in the fifth inning when Markovitch and Phil DiIanni both singled to get on and Calautti and Watkins sac bunted and sac flied to send them home ending the score at 8-0.
