Spartans baseball take two in Columbus

April 7, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
The Boardman High School baseball team opened the 2011 season in Columbus over the weekend with two strong wins against Dublin Scioto High School. The Spartans won the first contest 11-3 and then came back dropping the Irish 8-4 in the second contest. The wins put Boardman at 2-0 while the Irish are now 2-3.

In game one the locals came on strong in the first inning putting up four runs off two Scioto errors. Sophomore Nico DiIanni got on after a hit to second base was missed, giving him the bag. He advanced to second base on a balk. Danny Popio followed with a hard hit ball to short stop scoring DiIanni with Carmen Tarrantino following with a single that sent home Popio. An error on the second baseman put on David DiBernardi, who made his way to second base, and also scored Tarrantino. With two outs, Joey Markovitch singled putting runners at the corners. Markovitch got himself caught in a steal attempt and keep the play alive long enough for DiBernardi to score from third before being tagged out to end the inning.

Johnny Fithian started on the mound for Boardman forcing four strikeouts in four innings before giving up three runs in the fourth inning. A walk by John Carter started the inning and three singles and a double by AJ Barnhart plated three runs for the Irish making things 4-3 Boardman.

The Spartans answered back by putting up four more runs in the fifth inning when a fielder’s choice put Popio on first base. Tarantino followed with a base on a second baseman’s error and DiBernardi singled to load the bases. Troy Parks walked, sending in one run before Markovitch hit a single and a fielding error by the right fielder drove in three runs before the inning ended with the Spartans up 8-3.

Alec Neapolitan took the mound in the fifth inning holding the Spartans lead for two innings, giving up a hit.

The Spartans plated three more runs in the sixth inning to help the cause when Derek Pasquale tripled to lead things off before coming home on DiInna’s single. With one out, Popio followed with a deep shot to right field clearing the fence for a home run and two RBIs.

Jake Stauffer came in for the seventh inning to finish things off and after a shaky start giving up a walk and a pair of hits struck out Scioto’s top two batters to end the game.

Fithian (1-0) took the mound win for the Spartans in four innings giving up five hits and a walk while recording four strikeouts.

Popio lead all hitters with a two-run homer and scoring two runs with Pasquale putting up a triple and scoring a run.

Game 2 saw the Spartans record their second win in two outings this time by an 8-4 score. Phil Hall jumped on the mound for the Spartans also getting off to a rocky start in his first outing before taking control in the second inning while pitching four and getting the mound win.

Scioto plated three runs in the first inning on four singles in a row followed by a pitcher's error that sent home the last run.

The Spartans answered back for Hall in the second inning, tying things up when Markovitch lead off the inning with a double and coming home on a single by Mark Calautti. He advanced to second base when Parks walked then scored on DiIanni’s single. DiIanni stole second base on the next pitch and came home due to an over throw by the catcher trying to get him out.

In the top half of the fourth inning Boardman tacked on two more runs before Hall finished off his mound start in the bottom half of the inning putting up four K’s for the day. The locals’ runs came about with Parks singling and going to second base on a wild pitch. DiIanni singled to get on being hit home by Popio’s single while Parks came home off the bat of Mark Leone.

The bats came alive again for the Spartans in the 6th inning with Leone singling with one out and coming home on a triple by Popio. Carmen Tarantino singled in Popio before stealing second base. He came home by DiBernardi’s single. Parks ended the game on the mound for Boardman giving up two hits in the sixth inning but getting three strikeouts.

Tarantino went five-for-five in the contest with a triple and two RBI’s while Popio had a triple and two hits along with two RBI’s. Markovitch had a double and single also for the locals.
