The Austintown Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee has chosen this year’s inductees, who will be recognized at halftime of the Sept. 23 football game.
According to Woodside Elementary Principal Tim Kelty, who also serves as the Hall of Fame chairman, this year’s additions will bring the count up to 40 athletes, four coaches, four benefactors and six teams that are recognized as Falcon standouts.
“Each year we induct 10 athletes, one coach, one benefactor, and one or more teams,” Kelty said.
Those selected will have their photos and information included in a frame that, following the induction weekend ceremonies, will be placed in the display case at Fitch. Last year’s inductees will then be moved to the gymnasium walls.
Kelty said that like prior years, this year's event is expected to be big.
“Recipients and family members of the posthumous recipients will be announced on the football field on Friday Sept. 23,” Kelty said. “We also have a meet-and-greet before the game by the fitness center under a huge tent and have a little ceremony in the school also. After the game, we have a huge social at Quaker Steak & Lube for any Austintown alum and community member. It's a ton of fun!”
The selection committee this year consists of several former Fitch graduates. The committee includes Pat Smrek, Eddie Kohl, Marty Dyer, Joe Brooks, Jerry Bruff and Kelty.
“Fitch people doing Fitch business,” Kelty said.
The nominees came in prior to the committee meeting on March 10 where the selections were made.
This year’s individual honors go to Cecil Duffet, 1945, basketball and track; Don Schnurrenberger (posthumously), 1949, football, basketball and track; James Pontuti, 1959, football and track; Paul D'Eramo (posthumously), 1964, football and track; William Jacobson, 1966, basketball and baseball; Mike Woloschak, 1972, football and track; Mike Calhoun (posthumously), 1975 football and track; Gary Barber, 1982, football and basketball; Matt Keller, 1986, football and track; and Dana (Sulenski) Menendez, 1995, basketball and softball.
This year’s coach inductee is Dave Hartman (1982-1993) and the benefactor is Dr. Donald Dockery. The teams for 2011 will be the 1975 Fitch cross country team and the 1990 Fitch football team.
The Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled for Sept. 24 at Immaculate Heart of Mary’s banquet center.
