March 17, 2011
The Town Crier
The Canfield Cardinal sixth grade basketball team is headed to the championship game of the Austintown Basketball Tournament. The Cards defeated the number one seed Austintown Falcons on Saturday, 37-31 to advance. Next, they defeated Columbiana to end in third place.

Eugene Calabria led the Cardinals against Austintown with 13 points, and solid performances came from Jared Clark with seven points, Antonio Bonamase with six points, R.J. Williams with six points and Brandon McFall with five points. Dean Lauer handled the point guard position with skill.

Also contributing to the victory were Austin Householder, Ben Targove, Elie Malouf, Hunter Mortimer and Louie Burnett.

The Cardinal defense was stingy, led by three blocked shots by Clark and several key steels from Calabria and Bonamase for lay-ups. Williams and Calabria combined for 14 rebounds.

Canfield took an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Cardinals advanced to the semi-finals by defeating the Niles Red Dragons on Sunday, 37-11.
