• Freshman basketball
The Poland Seminary High School boys freshman basketball team defeated Canfield 50-49 to win the conference tournament on Feb. 24. It was the third time the Poland guys defeated Canfield this season. To advance to the finals, Poland had beaten Campbell 64-40 and Lakeview 62-40. The guys finished their season with an overall record of 16-2 and were undefeated in conference play. The team is coached by Joe Simko, who was also the coach of the league champion freshm,an football team. He is assisted by first-year assistant Niko Fatimus.
• College track stars
Competing with the Westminister College track team, freshman and PSHS grad Kyle Filicky set a school record in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:43.59 to place third at the Marietta Indoor Open. He also competed with the distance medley team that took first place with a time of 11:32.84.
On the women’s side, another PSHS grad who is on the Westminister team, Allison Rice, broke her own record by throwing an 11.52 in the shot put.
