February 28, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
Sophomore Ryan Bailey placed fifth in the 100 yard butterfly and 16th in the 100 breaststroke while senior Ashley Aldan placed 16th in the 100 yard breaststroke at the Ohio State Swimming Championships in Canton. Both Spartan swimmers earned All-Ohio Honors by finishing in the top 16.

The boy’s 200 medley relay snapped a school record in the preliminaries and placed in 12th in the finals earning All-Ohio Honors. Senior Steven Brooks, Bailey, junior Alex Downie, and senior Steven Moss set the new mark of 1:38.00. The old record of 1:38.99 was set in 2007 by Conner O’Halloran, Mike Barringer, Brian Worhatch, and Kenny Drombosky.

The Spartans also placed 17th in the boy’s 200 freestyle relay. Bailey and Moss teamed with seniors Michael Henson and Tommy Slagle on the free relay. They posted a season best time of 1:28.33.

“Our kids had a great meet. Ryan Bailey had career best times in both of his individual events and swam in the state finals as a sophomore. You don’t usually see sophomores in the top 8 at the state meet," Coach Terry O’Halloran said. "Senior Ashley Aldan is the comeback swimmer of the year. She overcame her injuries and swam her way back to the state meet for the third time. She now holds six out of nine individual school records and is on all three relay records. She is a very talented swimmer. Our swimmers worked hard this season and it paid off.”
