Sophomore Ryan Bailey qualified to swim the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke while senior Ashley Aldan will swim in the 100 breaststroke at the 2011 Division I State Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton this weekend. Bailey also qualified on the 200 medley and freestyle relays.
Joining Bailey on the medley relay will be senior Michael Henson, junior Alex Downie, and senior Steven Moss. Bailey and Moss will be teamed with seniors Tommy Slagle and Steven Brooks on the 200 freestyle relay.
The Boardman swimmers posted state qualifying times at the Northeast District Championships Feb. 19 at Cleveland State Championships. There were 105 Division I teams competing in the meet. The Spartan boys placed seventh with 119.5 points. The Spartan girls placed 17th overall.
Bailey had a pair of career-best times in his second place finish in the 100 butterfly (51.32) and fifth place in the 100 breaststroke (59.40).
Aldan had her second best time in her third place finish in the breaststroke (1:07.37).
“Ryan and Ashley are talented, hard-working swimmers who know how to handle the pressure of big meets," said coach Terry O'Halloran. "The Northeast District championships is a very fast meet and they stepped up with excellent swims. This will be Ashley’s third and Ryan’s first trip to the state meet. Our boys relays had their best times of the season while are girls slipped back a little from their six school record breaking performances at the sectional meet. The girls just missed qualifying their three relays. I am fortunate to have two excellent assistant coaches, Carlo Cordon and Carla Moser Flatley, who were instrumental in getting our swimmers to the state meet this year. They could be head coaches at any top flight program in the country but have chosen to coach swimming at Boardman. We are looking forward to some very fast swimming against the best teams in the state this weekend.”
