Middle school wrestlers land on top

January 20, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
The Poland Middle School wrestling team finished in second place during the Austintown Middle School duals held at Fitch High School earlier this month. The wrestlers finished with a 4–1 record on the day. They opened up with a tough 48–32 loss to Ravenna Southeast, before rallying with four straight wins over Boardman Glenwood (84–12), Liberty (84–0), Boardman Center (72–23) and Austintown Middle School (42-30). Leading the way for the Bulldogs were Darren Gooden (86), Bobby Murcko (92), Anthony Audi (128), and Anthony Mancini (160) who went 5–0 on the day. Dante Ginnetti (80), Bruno Spotleson (104), Christian Nemeth (115), Johnny Berndt (134), and Trey Ellis (142) all went 4-1 on the day.

Other wrestlers who competed and put on great showings were Anthony Morucci (98), Dylan Garver (110), Josh Kulifay (150), Dan Cipriano (160), and Evan Brown (172). Competing and winning in exhibition matches were Brett Nemeth (80), Luke Black (86), Nelson Figeroua (110), and Matt Duran (122).

Last weekend, the Bulldogs placed three wrestlers at the Jackson Milton Invitational, including fourth place Max Prizant at 103, third Place AJ Shields at 119, and 112-pound tournament champion Tad Duran.

Jason Velasquez and Edwin Figueroa both lost in the “money round,” the round that would have placed them into the finals wrestling for third place. Velasquez went 2-2 on the weekend.

Edwin “Penguin” Figueroa went 3-2 on the weekend pinning a Liberty opponent and one from Girard, then defeated a Girard opponent, 9-6, before falling to third place. Joe Williams, Bob Bricker, Justin Ladesic, and Mitch Lidle also competed this weekend. Mike Audi, Joel Miller, Jordan Ziegler all posted wins.

Regarding Duran's big win, coach Tony Stellato said, “He defeated Cardiero 5-3 in an overtime match. Tad imposed his will in this match, he pushed the pace, went after this kid, and out-physicalled him. We need to tighten up his game a little bit and make some minor adjustments, but he wrestled very well today." Duran is Stellato’s first individual champion as a Poland Bulldog head coach. He currently leads the team with 12 victories.
