January 20, 2011
Special to the Town Crier
The Poland High School wrestling team defeated Brookfield, 51-18 last week. Key matches included Max Prizant scoring a dominating victory over his Brookfield rival, 5-1.

Tad Duran got a pin in 3:15 after leading 5-0. AJ Shields fell behind early in his match 5-2, then battled his way back for the win. Other key victories were posted by Poland’s Joel Miller, Jordan Ziegler, Edwin Figueroa, Mike Audi, Bob Bricker, and Mitch Lidle.

Following the Brookfield matches, the Bulldogs faced state-ranked number five Jackson Milton. The Bulldogs quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead winning the first three matches. Prizant scored a 7-0 win, Duran scored a technical fall 15-0, and Shields scored a 4-2 victory. Bricker scored an exciting pin using a body scissors in 2:47. Justin Ladesic lost an overtime match, 8-10.

“Justin wrestled up from 171 to 189 and gave that kid everything he could handle and more,” said Poland coach Tony Stellato. ”Justin was clearly the wrestler that was in better shape. We will see him again this weekend.”

At the end of regulation the score was tied 8-8, but Jackson Milton fell short in overtime. Audi lost a hard-fought battle.

“Mike wrestled very well,” Stellato said. “He made the kid work for every point.”

“I am very pleased with the way our kids wrestled today,” he continued. “I can pull something positive from each one of our matches, which shows that we are moving in the right direction, and the kids are starting to figure out the sport and the system that we are putting into place."

Duran currently leads the team in most victories this season with 10.
