The Austintown Fitch girls golf team continues to improve. The team sent one golfer to districts for the second year in a row.
The team finished the season at 5-9 overall and 3-4 in league play.
“Three wins in the league is a new record for us,” said golf coach Leonard Gessler. “We finished fifth in both pre-season tournament play and post season. That’s our best finish ever.”
The one girl who made it to districts was freshman Rachel Williamson, who was named second team All Federal League. Williamson was one of 72 girls who qualified for districts and was the only freshman at the event. Gessler, who started coaching the boys team for two years and held the position of girls’ coach for the past five, said it was the second time a Fitch girl made districts. He said last year Shelby Kolat qualified as a senior. This year she is a freshman at YSU and Gessler said she is considering being a walk-on for the YSU girls golf team next year.
Receiving Federal League honorable mentions from this year’s team was freshman Maura Bianco and the team’s only senior, Leah Infanti.
Gessler said this was the final season for the golf team as next year they will move to the All American Conference. He said they will be playing a different line up of teams including Howland, Canfield, Poland, and Niles.
“We will play each one of them twice during the season,” Gessler said.
With the season over, Gessler said he has a lot of returners for next year. He told those girls to stay n shape by hitting the ball at least ten minutes every day. He also recommended they practice at the Golf Dome in Girard over the winter months.
“I encourage the girls to stay in shape,” he said.
