The Austintown Fitch girls tennis team may be at 3-5 on the season, but the doubles teams are keeping the win column active.
“We are doing well in doubles,” said head coach Janet Polish. “Caitlin Sheridan and Victoria Phelps are our No. 1 doubles and Nikki and Kellie Wenick are number two.”
The team’s season opened in mid-August when they took on Howland. The Fitch girls lost all three singles matches, but carried both doubles. The Wenick girls took their match with sets of 6-0 and 6-0. Sheridan and Phelps also came through with sets of 6-3 and 6-3 to give a final team score of 2-3 and Fitch’s first loss.
Two weeks ago, Fitch faced JFK, who swept the meet to take a 5-0 win and put the Falcons at 0-2. Later in the week, the Fitch girls took their third loss with Perry by a score of 2-3. Again, the singles matches belonged to the opponents, but the doubles matches were all Fitch with the Wenicks taking sets at 6-2 and 6-4. Sheridan and Phelps won their sets 7-6 and 7-6.
Tired of ending up in the loss column, the girls rallied against Lordstown and made a clean sweep. In singles action Ali Macioge, Sarah Ragan and Amber Kovach won their matches, while the two doubles teams left their opponents at the net without a point. That brought the Fitch overall record to 1-3 as they prepared for Poland last week.
Poland proved tough in singles on Aug 23, capturing all three matches. Just like the season opener, the Austintown doubles teams came on strong to help the team finish 3-2, bringing the record to 1-4.
On Aug 24, the girls took on GlenOak. The Wenick girls were back together and along with Sheridan and Phelps, they again swept the two doubles matches. In singles, Ragan came through with sets of 6-2 and 6-0 to give Fitch a 3-2 team score and another number for the win column, making the record 2-4 overall.
In mid-week action last Wednesday, the team took on Ursuline. Nikki Wenick was moved to singles, where she posted the lone loss. Taking her place with Kellie on the doubles was Ali Macioge. The two girls were unstoppable, bringing the Ursuline pair down 6-1, 6-2. Sheridan and Phelps also took the win with 6-0 and 6-2. Back in singles play, Ragan won the match 6-4 and 4-1 after a forfeit. Kovach beat her Irish opponent to place the the scores at Fitch 4, Ursuline 1. That decision gave the Fitch girls a season record of 3-4 and 1-1 in conference action.
On Thursday, Aug. 26, the Fitch girls took on a determined Boardman team who dominated singles and took the doubles match with Sheridan and Phelps. The Wenick girls pulled out the only win with sets of 6-2 and 6-4.
The girls finished up last week at 3-5 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
