The Poland varsity golf teams are into their season with the boys opening last week and the girls set to play Howland, Aug. 19.
The boys varsity golf team finished last year’s season at 9-6 overall. They ended up third in the All American Conference and third in the sectionals, which qualified them for districts. At districts, they finished in the number 12 spot, but head coach Dave DiGiacomo is looking for a better run this year.
“We have a good returning class of seniors this year,” the coach said. “Our goal is to win the (AAC) Red Tier Conference and return to districts.”
The guys kicked off their season Aug. 10 at the Bronko Invitational in Geneva at Hemlock Springs Golf Course. Poland ended up runner up out of 14 teams and finished with a team score of 322.
DiGiacomo said he only lost four seniors from last year’s team, but added he has a good group of new seniors this year.
“The incoming senior class is very talented,” he said. “We hope they lead us to a great season.”
On the girls’ side, head coach Judy Young said it is a building year.
“We’re a young team,” she said. “We only have two returners from the 2009 state runner-up team.”
She is starting the season with four juniors, one senior and two freshmen on the varsity squad. So far, they have competed in three matches at Hills and Dale, JFK and a tri-match at Mill Creek last week. Their next outing is today as they take on Howland.
Poland varsity golfer Steve Sofocleous is off to a good start for the 2010 season. He was low man at 76 during the Bronko Invitational last week in Gevena.
