The Poland Community Little League girls softball team has won their first game in the Little League Softball World Series, being played in Portland, Ore., Aug. 12 to 18. The team is representing the U.S. Central in the Series.

At 8 p.m. Thursday, the local girls faced the U.S. Southwest team from Washington County Little League in Brenham, Texas and outscored them by one run, winning 5-4 in six innings. Aleah Hughes took the mound win with Allyson Deemer pitching in relief with the duo giving up only three hits for the game.

On the offensive side, Claire Testa singled in the bottom of the first, stole second, advanced on a passed ball then brought in the first run of the game on an error. Likewise, Deemer took advantage of a string of errors by Southwest to bring in another to put the locals up 2-0 at the end of the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, Madison Rowe and Abigail Masluk both recorded singles and earned runs through errors. Testa also brought in a run after she was walked, stole second and was batted in.

Poland's girls seemed to have it locked up with a 5-0 lead at the end of two innings, but the Texans weren't about to let up yet. Five walks in the top of the third helped Southwest post four runs for the inning and Deemer was brought in to pitch.

But in Bulldog spirit, Poland bit back and Deemer let Southwest have only two more hits in the game and sent the girls from Texas back to their dugout scoreless to take the loss. Arlia Duarte and Deemer kept their bats moving to earn two more hits for the Series opener as Poland brought home their first win from the national stage.

The team faces Latin America at 5 p.m. today. Team members include Masluk, Testa, Deemer, Duarte, Kristyn Svetlak, Jenna Schettler, Danielle Rutana, Megan Marsico, Kathryn Wilson and Cara Kalouris.
