The Ohio Gymnastics Institute of Austintown took home two all-around national titles from this year’s Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games on Aug. 1. Level 7 gymnast Alexis Charles of Liberty earned the all-around (combined score of all events) gold medal for her performance at the national event. Alexis, who will be a fifth-grader at W.S. Guy Middle School, is the 10-year-old daughter of Tim and Kellie Charles and has been with the OGI team for almost seven years.
Alexis said her favorite thing about gymnastics is making a lot of “great friends while doing a sport she loves.” She exhibited her passion well at the AAU event posting the highest all-around score for the entire competition. She posted high enough scores in the finals to sweep every event as well.
Joining her on the podium was Kasey Solic of Austintown, who earned a bronze all-around medal for her performance. Solic, 11, and daughter of Jeff and April Solic will be a fifth-grader at Frank Ohl Intermediate School. She began her gymnastics career when she was just 18 months old. She has been part of the OGI team for nine years where her favorite event is the balance beam. She said her favorite thing about gymnastics is the fact that it challenges her to do her best. The recent AAU competition was Solic’s first level 7 competition and she was still able to nab the bronze in all-around during preliminaries and the silver during the finals.
