The 2010 softball season started off well for the Fitch Lady Falcons on March 31 in Howland.
Fitch put up a run in the first inning against the Lady Tigers thanks to an RBI single by Carly Ortz. Unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, that would be the last time anybody knocked in a run all day. Howland’s Haley Marchio surrendered only five hits and a walk while striking out three in the Tigers 4-1 opening day victory.
Amanda Callahan got the opening start for the Falcons and was fine for four innings. The junior walked four, but also struck out five Tigers. Callahan gave way to fellow junior Emily Purnell in the fifth inning and that did not turn out very well for the Falcons. The fifth is when Howland scored all four of its runs tagging Purnell with the loss. The big blow in that frame was a bases-loaded double by Tori McCormick that scored all three runners.
The only other Fitch hitters to pick up safeties besides Ortz were Alyssa Jones, Brianna Banko, Stephanie Berdis and Alana Callahan.
Fitch’s ladies will have to pick up the pace offensively this week because they embark on four straight games against Federal League opponents. The first three of that quarter are at least at home against GlenOak, Boardman and Massillon Jackson. Fitch will also hit the road to Canton McKinley to conclude that treacherous stretch.
