The Lady Spartans broke the school record in the 200-yard medley relay while Boardman advanced 15 swimmers and one diver to the district championships.

Gaby DeAscentis, Ashley Aldan, Jessica Gonda and Emily Bodamer now own the school record in the 200-yard medley relay. The girls set the new record time of 1:55.07 in the first event of the sectional championships Feb. 13 at Akron University.

The previous record of 1:55.56 was set last year at the same meet by Stephanie Sfara, Ashley Aldan, Katie Henson and Megan Palmer. During the two-day competition at Ocasek Natatorium, 15 of the Spartan swimmers and one diver advanced to the district championships at Cleveland State University on Feb. 17 and 19.

On the boys side, freshman Ryan Bailey was the highest qualifier. Bailey is seeded sixth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 100 breaststroke.

On the girls side, junior Aldan is seeded 10th in the 50 freestyle.

Boardman also advanced all six relays to the district meet. The girls' 200 freestyle and the boys' 200 medley relays are seeded eighth. The girls 200 medley and the boys 200 freestyle relay are seeded 11th. The girls are seeded 11th in the 400 free relay and boys are 12th. In the one-meter diving, senior Karlie Ligore advanced by placing 12th in sectionals.

Coach Terry O'Halloran said, "Qualifying 16 athletes to the district meet is a great accomplishment for our program. Snapping a school record in the first event of the girls' meet jump started the whole team. DeAscentis split a 29.5 on the opening backstroke leg of the relay, which is one of fastest splits in the past three years. Most of our swimmers had personal best times. We loaded our relays with the goal of qualifying all six to districts. Bailey and Colleen Manning had big meets and set two freshman records each. They showed us that they can handle the pressure of high school sectionals."

Double individual district qualifiers include: Bailey in the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke, senior Ryan Mitchell in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, sophomore Alex Downie in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, Manning in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and junior Gonda in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Individual event qualifiers are: junior Steven Moss in the 50 freestyle, senior Ali Azeem in the 100 butterfly, junior Michael Henson in the 100 backstroke, junior Steven Brooks in the 100 backstroke, Aldan in the 50 freestyle, sophomore Bodamer and senior Megan Barringer in the 100 freestyle, DeAscentis and senior Jeana McEvey in the 100 breaststroke.

In relays, these teams have qualified: 200 girls medley, DeAscentis, Aldan, Gonda, and Bodamer; 200 boys medley, Henson, Bailey, Gonda, and Bodamer (school record); 200 girls freestyle, Aldan, Bodamer, Barringer, and C. Manning; 200 boys freestyle, Azeem, Reardon, junior Mike Reardon, and Moss; 400 girls freestyle, Aldan, Gonda, Bodamer, and C. Manning; and the 400 boys freestyle, Moss, Reardon, Henson, and Bailey.
