A memorial service will be held at a later date for Mary Alice (Szmara) Johnson, 94, who passed away Jan. 26 at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Boardman.

She was born June 9, 1915 in Youngstown, the daughter of Alexander and Franciszka Szmara. Mary was a 1932 graduate of Rayen High School. After high school, she attended Choffin Career Center, where she obtained her licensed practical nurse certificate. Mary worked as an industrial licensed practical nurse for Oldberg Manufacturing for 10 years. She also did private duty nursing for 20 years with the LPN registry in Youngstown.

She married Gideon E. Johnson on April 19, 1933, and he preceded her in death May 1, 2005.

Mary was involved in many clubs and organizations. She was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church for 22 years and of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Auxiliary. She was formerly a member of St. Casimir’s Church. She was involved with Private Duty Nurse Registry and was a member of the Women’s Hubbard and Mill Creek Golf Leagues. Mary enjoyed doing seamstress work, knitting, and crocheting. She also loved playing cards, poker, and she liked casinos.

Mary is survived by three children, Jacqueline Cunningham of Poland, Richard (Edith Ann) Johnson of Oil City, Pa., and Suzanne (Chuck) Trimbath of North Lima. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Denise Sargent of Canfield, Diana Cummins of California, Heather Lyons of Chicago, Steven Johnson of Eagle River, Alaska, Christopher Trimbath of Toledo and Bradley Trimbath of Pittsburgh. She leaves nine great-grandchildren: Robert and Eric Sargent; Alexandra, Matthew, and Erin Lyons; and Dylan, Luke, Tanner, and Abbie Johnson. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Godfrey and Jenny Szmara; two brothers, Walter and Alexander Szmara; and a granddaughter, Debra Cunningham. Family and friends may view this obituary and send condolences at
