Services were held the morning of Dec. 31, 2009 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church for Florence Zirounis, 83, who died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Greenbriar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Zirounis was born June 13, 1926, in Youngstown to the late Evangelos and Rubini Markakis Michelakis Meshel.

She was a graduate of East High School and a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where she was a member of its choir for 70 years, St. Nicholas Philoptochos, where she served as treasurer and corresponding secretary, St. Nicholas Seniors, Cretan Society, the Daughters of Penelope, where she served as an officer, and E.A.D. Sorority.

She worked as an office manager for Olympic Painting and Sheeting Company for 30 years, which she began with her husband, Michael. She also worked for Dr. Hutt, Dr. Hovanic, Dr. Rizk and Dr. Dodgson, as office manager for 40 years. Previously she worked in the billing department of Strouss Department Store.

She is survived by one son, Nikitas “Nik” M. (Gina) Zirounis of Mineral Ridge; three daughters, Carol (Brian) Fountaine of Boardman, Kelli (Jim) Rawden of Youngstown and Rubena (Demetrios) Papakirk of Poland, with whom she made her home; a brother, state Sen. Harry Meshel of Youngstown; a sister, Dee (Gus) Thomas of Youngstown; and five grandchildren, Michael and Alexandra Fountaine, Andrew Rawden, Chryssa and Mark Papakirk; and several loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Mrs. Zirounis was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, whom she married May 20, 1926, and who died Jan. 5, 1985; two brothers, Phillip and George Meshel; and one sister, Mamie Coutris.
