12-year-old breaks 35-year-old pool record

November 5, 2009
The Town Crier
Twelve-year-old Theresa Mikolay, a sixth-grade student at Canfield Village Middle School, set a new Youngstown YMCA Y-Neptune swim team pool record in the 11- and 12-year-old girls’ 50-yard breaststroke at the team's first home meet Oct. 24. Swimming against the North Canton YMCA, Mikolay won the event in the pool record time of 34.53 seconds. The previous record of 34.80 seconds was set in 1974 by a swimmer from the Cuyahoga Falls YMCA.

Mikolay's breaststroke time also qualifies her for the Great Lakes Zone Championships which takes place March 19, 20 and 21, 2010 at Bowling Green State University. This important event is comprised of YMCA swimmers from Michigan, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio who achieve qualifying times during the course of the YMCA winter swim season, which runs from October through March.
