A memorial service was held Jan. 5 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman for J. Peter Van Nest, 78, who passed away Dec. 31, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman. He was born May 5, 1930 in Irvington, N.J., the son of Joseph P. and Gladys H. (McClelland) Van Nest.

Peter was a 1948 graduate of Boardman High School and graduated from Kent State University. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and was the owner and operator of Van Nest Real Estate and Insurance until his retirement in 1982. He was an active member of the Boardman Kiwanis and served as president of Youngstown Area Polio Foundation. He was past president of Boardman F.O.P.A. and served as township trustee in Boardman. Peter was a member of the Sulgrave Masonic Lodge #696, and the Youngstown Shrine Club. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and served on the church board and various committees. Peter enjoyed collecting and restoring antique cars and furniture, and was a member of the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club. He loved golf and was an avid reader.

Peter leaves his wife, the former Helen S. Kalman, whom he married Sept. 6, 1952; a daughter, Laurel S. (Charles T.) Whitman; a son, Jonathan (Paula) Van Nest; and three grandchildren, Bradley Whitman, Suzanne Whitman and Shane Van Nest. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends called Jan. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home in Boardman, and Jan. 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests material tributes take the form of donations to the Memorial Fund at Bethel Lutheran Church.
