"Like a kid on Christmas"
December 10, 2010 - Kathleen Palumbo
I miss the “Santa Claus Christmas’s.” You know, the days of watching your child’s face alight in awe on Santa’s lap, leaving out cookies on Christmas Eve, sprinkling “reindeer food” on the front lawn, and shopping at toy stores, (frighteningly, I can still recite with impressive accuracy the answering machine message of “the world’s biggest toy store”) as though it were a mantra.
Now…with two kids in college it’s mostly about necessities. They need winter coats, warm clothes for schlepping across campus in a cold Ohio winter, and the “oh-so-exciting” car tires. Whoopee.
Yep…gone are the days of making lists for Santa, having to wait until sleep finally overcame excitement at 2a.m. when you could safely tiptoe those presents down under the tree, happily giving credit to a “chubby fairy tale” for making their dreams come true.
Being the “glass is half-full” kinda girl I am, I guess I should look at the bright side; On Christmas Eve, I can acquire more than 3.5 hours of sleep before hearing the stirrings of anticipation, the crowds at Santa’s arrival can be overrated, and who says he should get all the best cookies?
More importantly…for now, my kids still sleep under my roof, I get to see their happy faces on Christmas morning, and you can bet I’ll make sure those winter coats, warm clothes and car tires are accompanied by a few “toys” just for old times sake.
