World’s longest yard sale
August 7, 2009 - Kathie Evanoff
If you are traveling south this week, you might have come across what is being touted as the World’s Largest Yard Sale.
Supposedly spanning more than 650 miles through five states, the sale starts in southwestern Ohio and travels through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama.
The sale runs for four days, beginning yesterday and ending Thursday. Better hurry. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to cover the entire sale in all four days, let alone the two that are left. The giant yard sale spans Highway 127 and travels through the scenic Cumberland Plateau. If you don’t care about yard sales, visiting Cumberland Gap, Tennessee is a trip worth taking even without the prospect of looking at other people’s cast-offs along the way. We took our children to the “gap” several years ago on vacation and spent time in some of the loveliest areas of the country, in my opinion.
Although I don’t have hopes of going to the World’s longest Yard Sale, at least not this year (next year’s sale is already scheduled for Aug. 5 to 8), I like that local farms in those areas are pitching in by setting up farmers’ markets along the sale path too. But we don’t have to travel four-plus hours to visit a farmers’ market. Locally, the Howland Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Howland Park near the gazebo just off of East Market Street.
Local farmers have produce, eggs and cheese and you can also see local artisan work, such as jewelry makers and other cool stuff. They have entertainment too.
When it comes to farmers’ markets, we sort of get the short end of the stick around here. With our short growing season, we don’t even get started until late June to mid-July. The Howland market plans to continue on into September, but for those who do grow fresh produce and have plenty to spare, you can set up your own booth at the market. They are always looking for vendors. Call 330-856-5223 for information.
