Tis' the season for nostalgia
November 5, 2010 - Kathleen Palumbo
As the Christmas season approaches and I become nostalgic, I hope something on my list will strike a chord in you, and maybe…just maybe…implore you to revisit an old tradition. Who remembers…?
Venturing into the amazing Christmas wonderland that was downtown Youngstown. Day after Thanksgiving shopping wasn’t a “Let’s head out at 12:01 a.m. in our pajamas to trample one another over a Holiday Barbie.” It was an event. Spirits were high, people were smiling…it was Christmastime after all.
Door to door caroling. Just friends getting together, oblivious to the complete and total lack of singing ability amongst them. It was good old-fashioned fun…especially when a total stranger would offer up hot chocolate in exchange for an extra chorus of Silent Night.
Decorating…with passion. It wasn’t about twelve hundred twinkling lights that outdo the Jones’s. It still isn’t. It’s about creating an atmosphere that leaves you in a warm, comfortable Christmas awe every time you return home.
When baking wasn’t an all-nighter preparing 16 dozen cookies for the office gift exchange. You just baked what you and your favorite people loved…and you shared with them.
So…? You know what you really love. Surround yourself with it, bake it, shop in the true spirit of giving, visit a downtown cafe, and if door-to-door isn’t for you, at the very least, put on your favorite Christmas cd’s and let loose. Temps are dropping, windows are closed. Nobody will know but you.
