The Farmers Markets are coming
June 29, 2010 - Kathie Evanoff
The bad thing is we have to wait a long time for Farmers Markets to begin in our area. The good thing is, our wait is over.
Farmers Markets featuring local and mostly organic food are gearing up for the rest of the summer. Normally we had to wait until the middle of July, but the Howland Farmers Market is opening a week early this season in conjunction with the township’s Fourth of July festivities.
Sunday afternoon, stop by Howland Park near the gazebo and see what local growers have to offer in the way of fresh produce, free range meat and eggs and homemade cheese.
As a proponent of local growers and fresh produce, I yearn for Farmers Market season. I follow blogs from southern Ohio, where markets have been going on for more than a month and wish I lived closer to Dayton or Cincinnati.
Yes, I have a garden and grow much of my own produce, but I don’t grow everything and I don’t have a farm where animals graze on fields and sweet milk is curdled into my favorite cheese. My own cheesemaking techniques are limited to mozzarella and ricotta and even that is with cow’s milk. Who can resist a sliced baguette slathered with fresh goat cheese? Not me.
Following the parade at 1 p.m., the Howland market will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. July 4. Although this day is a Sunday, the following markets will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Saturday, July 10. The market will be held each week until Oct. 16.
Make a decision to start eating healthier this summer. Visit and shop at local Farmers Markets and support those who live right here in our own communities.
