Sno'man stands alone
December 13, 2011 - Kathleen Palumbo
I know I’m not alone in having a “collection” of sorts. What began with a single snowman, has over the years become a full blown “Frosty, friends, and family” issue of mine, recently brought to my attention by my son, who, in a completely willing and not at all disgusted manner climbed his way into the attic to retrieve my Christmas decorations.
The conversation went a little like this:
“It’s the big grey box.” “This one?” “Yep.” “Wait, here’s another – and this one’s really heavy.” “There’s another one next to it too…but it can’t…wait, SERIOUSLY mom!” “I can’t believe…OH MY GOD…there’s FOUR boxes of snowmen up here…it’s ridiculous what we go through for Christmas in this house!”
My casual reply of “Someday, you’ll have decorations for your own home,” was followed by what I’m sure was an intentionally indiscernible mumble meant only to annoy me.
In my own defense, I did not purchase this wealth of snowmen. In fact, the vast majority were gifts. You know how it goes… people find out you have an issue…I mean collection…of something…and before you know it – it has spun out of control.
I would downsize, but in truth, each and every one of the little darlings…from my favorite rustic relics to the mercury glass masterpiece has a special place in my heart.
And so I urge you - treasure your own collections and tune out the naysayers. Frosty and company will be with me for many years to come…and someday, I’m going to leave my impressive collection to my children – I can’t wait to tell my son.
